The retrofit market, that is to say the improvement of existing buildings and infrastructure so that they meet tomorrow's requirements, will be a gigantic opportunity for Architects, Engineers and Contractors, over the next three decades. The chairman of the Sustainability Development Commission, Will Day, estimates that the cost of retrofit sponsored by climate change concerns could total up to £500 billion over 20 to 30 years. Thus far, this market is relatively unsung, partly because it shows little visible sign of having been undertaken, and partly because it lacks the glamour of more publicly accessible conservation projects.
In order to address this lack of praise, The Architects' Journal, The BEST Show and New Civil Engineer are delighted to present a brand new awards programme celebrating outstanding work being done in this field. The Retrofit Awards, which will take place at The BEST Show in October of this year, will aim to identify and reward the excellent projects and strategies that are being rolled out around the country.
Antony Oliver, editor, New Civil Engineer magazine commented:
"Retrofitting will be increasingly top of mind for every built environment client going forward as they strive to both save money and cut down on carbon emissions. The successful designers, contractors and suppliers will be those best able to demonstrate and deliver the innovate ideas and new ways of working that make our existing infrastructure perform better at the lowest possible whole life cost. These new Retrofit Awards will reward the best achievements and provide a unique platform from which to share best practice and drive new thinking across the whole industry and its supply chain."
