The Demonstration Programme

National and West Midlands Context

Red Hill School, WorcesterRed Hill School, WorcesterWMCCE is the home of the West Midlands Demonstration Programme. The Demonstration Programme highlights projects where innovation and best practice are carried out and measured. The programme provides the opportunity for organisations, from every part of construction, to bring forward exemplars that demonstrate innovation and change, which can be measured, evaluated and shared.

Running parallel with this programme are separate programmes run nationally by Constructing Excellence and by other centres around the country. WMCCE maintains a complete list of demonstration projects within the West Midlands as well as National.

Current projects are listed on separate pages for WMCCE demonstration projects, and demonstration projects for Constructing Excellence.

West Midlands Demonstration Projects

WMCCE encourages construction projects to become leading-edge as demonstration projects, to enable the learning (not only from success but also from problems encountered) to be captured from them, using that learning to influcence change in the industry. Experience has shown that nothing can compare to using lessons from real projects when trying to make the case for change. Constant review and improvement is championed.

Demonstration Projects can be site based or refer to organisational change. They can reflect specific themes such as sustainability, respect for people etc. They can come from all aspects of construction including civil work to building and, of course, housing - both social and private. The whole supply chain is encouraged to join in.

Project participants commit to learning and sharing from, and with, each other and must also agree to measure their performance with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in order to prove the business case for change.

Benefits

Benefits from participating in the West Midlands Demonstration Programme include:

  • Marketing and Profile Raising - WMCCE promotes a project through case studies, press releases, newsletter articles and podcasts. These are put on the WMCCE website, given out at events, retained on the WMCCE database and sent to targeted media. Opportunities to present at events such as Best Practice Clubs are also available.
  • Knowledge Transfer - Experience shows that participants derive significant benefits by engaging in the programme and linking with other Demonstrations to learn and share from one another.
  • Recognition at the annual regional Constructing Excellence Awards - Achieving Demonstration Project status aknowledges the project as exemplar and therefore ideally places it as a potential entry to the WMCCE Constructing Excellence Awards at the annual Celebrating Construction event. Celebrating Construction is the major annual showcase and awards ceremony for the Construction Industry in the West Midlands. WMCCE Award winners are eligible for inclusion in the annual National Constructing Excellence Awards.

Current Themes

Current regional themes include:

  • Offsite
  • Sustainability
  • Logistics
  • Integration and collaborative working

N.B. These themes are not exclusive and are constantly being revised we are therefore also keen to hear from projects with alternative themes.

We are also interested in smaller projects such as single houses or building which are exemplar or show an element of innovation or demonstrate best practice.
