Management of Waste

Site Waste Management Planning

Site Waste Management Plans address two key issues:

  • Improving materials resource efficiency, by promoting economic use of construction materials and methods so that waste is minimised and any waste that is produced can be re-used, recycled or recovered in other ways before disposal options are explored
  • Reducing fly-tipping, by restricting the opportunities available for the illegal disposal of waste by ensuring compliance with existing legal controls and providing a full audit trail of any waste that is removed from the construction site.

Legal Requirement

Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) became a legal requirement for construction projects in England over £300,000 after the 6th of April 2008. The Site Waste Management Plans Regulations 2008 apply to:

  • new build
  • maintenance
  • alteration or installation/removal of  services such as sewerage and water.

A Site Waste Management Plan sets out how building materials, and resulting waste, is to be managed during the project.
