The organisers of an award ceremony which aims to highlight best practice and excellence in the West Midlands construction industry, showed their commitment to the future of the sector this week when they presented a cheque to a charity supporting young people who want a career in construction.
David Bucknall, Chairman of the West Midlands Centre for Constructing Exellence (WMCCE), presented a cheque for £2,710 to the Construction Youth Trust (CYT). The money was raised at the Celebrating Construction Awards 2010, which were organised by WMCCE in conjunction with Birmingham City Council’s Building Consultancy Service and the Chartered Institute of Building.
Organised annually, the awards showcase the very best projects and talent within the West Midlands construction industry, recognising innovation and excellence throughout the sector. This year’s event saw the launch of WMCCE’s best practice campaign – an initiative aimed at promoting and encouraging all those involved in construction in the West Midlands, to perform to best practice standards.
David Bucknall, Chairman of WMCCE, says:
“The CYT is the charity of choice for WMCCE. It supports all of our fundamental principles and plays a vital role in encouraging young people to consider a career in the construction sector and breaking down any barriers they may face such as finances, gender, ethnicity or low self-esteem.
“With the construction sector being so important to the UK economy, the service that the CYT provides is vital, in order to make sure that the industry remains strong in the future.”
Christine Townley, Director of the CYT comments:
"We would like to thank WMCCE for making the trust ‘Charity of the Night’ at the Celebrating Construction event. The money will be used to help the trust's West Midlands based young offender imitative, and also to implement our ‘Budding Brunel’ programme in the region - a popular programme aimed at informing students aged 16+ about the engineering and building professions.”
